In one of the most exciting senior finals in years, Merrion won the Leinster Senior Cup by one run on the last ball of the match. Needing two to win [one for a tie was not enough] Dom Joyce bowled Eddie Richardson for a dramatic victory. On an easy paced Malahide wicket the batsmen were on the top throughout and although Merrion scored a competitive 272 for seven, most on the ground thought it was a little light, especailly after North County reached 150 for the loss of only one wicket in good time. But the last ball before tea saw John Anderson bowl Conor Armstrong to provide a chink of light. An excellent bowling spell from CUS schoolboy Tyrone Kane [to add to a fluent 66 with the bat] earned him man of the match and meant that North County had to score at six an over for 10 overs. A pulsating finish saw the match swing one way then another until 10 runs were needed off the last over. And so it came down to one ball - and two to win. There were only a few people on the ground that could remember the last time Merrion won the cup - 51 years before in 1960.
Merrion 272-7 off 60 overs (D Joyce 66, T Kane 66, J Anderson 46, K Beasley 44,)
North County 271-9 from 60 overs (G Hay 89, C Armstrong 57, E Richardson 34, T Kane 3-32)
