Greystones Cricket, a new and inclusive cricket club, has been formed with the aim of bringing the game of cricket to a wider audience in Greystones and the surrounding areas. As a prelude to the 2012 season the club will be hosting two events open to anyone who might be interested in joining the club and learning more about cricket.
Led by an international core of enthusiasts, players and coaches, Greystones Cricket hope to field up to six teams in 2012, with two senior mens teams, a ladies team, a Taverners team and a full junior section catering for ages from 6 upwards. This new and exciting club has set itself the goal of building a family-oriented club that caters for all ages and abilities, and is especially keen to promote cricket to the children and youth of the area. “In what other team sport is can you find a 16 year old beginner and 46 year old player with years of experience playing competitively together on the same pitch?”, said David Drane, President of the new club.
For 2012, Greystones Cricket will be making use of the facilities of Greystones Rugby Club.
The club will be hosting two events in the coming week to allow people to find out a little more about the club and to learn more about the game.
The first event will be an informal meet and greet at Greystones Rugby Club on December 3rd from 2PM to 5PM, where it will be possible to meet the members of the club and the committee for a chat.
The second event (An Introduction to Cricket) will take place on December 5th in the sports hall at Kilcoole VEC from 6PM to 9PM. This event is being run in association with Cricket Ireland and is aimed at providing participants with a basic understanding of the game of cricket and the three important components of the game: Coaching, Umpiring, and Scoring. Through a number of game-based activities and coaching components, participants will also be introduced to the skills and resources required to conduct/assist a cricket session with children.
All are welcome to attend the event, which will cost €15, and we particularly would welcome teachers, tertiary education students, parents and youth workers with little or no understanding of cricket as well as current players and interested people with little or no coaching, umpiring or scoring experience. The course will be delivered by fully trained local instructors who have been through an ICC Cricket Education Instructors course conducted by their ICC Development regional office.
