Just over a week after the second Hundred Ball League (HBL) day of 2022, Ringcommons was the venue for the third and final day of the format that has helped to change the approach to the game of so many of our young, female cricketers.
For what feels like the first time this summer, the players were greeted with a mizzly day but nothing could dampen the spirits of the players, many of whom were playing the format for the first time.
It has also been the first summer for many of them, where they have experienced a full season of cricket without covid restrictions and spirits were high.
The true aim of HBL is to encourage the players to experiment and on Sunday, more than any other day, we saw that. Cheers went up on the sideline as sixes were hit with regularity and we saw the highest scoring games of the summer by a long way.
We also saw friendly competition between clubmates as they found themselves on opposition teams batting and bowling against each other which added another dimension the players are not used to.
With most women’s cricket finishing up this week, the final day of HBL was a lovely way to finish out the season for the majority of the players. Focus will now turn to the possibility of an indoor HBL in winter time.
