The new format of the Schools Senior League saw the introduction of four sections of three teams. The top two teams in each section qualified for quarter -finals and the losers in each section went into a plate competition.
The inaugural Senior League Plate competition saw St Columba’s overcome the High School and Gonzaga defeat The King’s Hospital in the semi-finals. The final played at Merrion CC on Tuesday 14th May saw Gonzaga run out comfortable winners over St Columba’s.
In the quarter-finals of the Senior League St Mary’s defeated CUS, Belvedre defeated Sandford, Wesley overcame Balbriggan Community College and St Andrew’s saw off Castleknock Community College. It was great to see two new schools Balbriggan and Castleknock participate in the premier schools’ competition for the first time.
The semi-finals played on Wednesday 15th May resulted in St Andrew's defeating Belvedere by 43 runs and St Mary’s beating Wesley by 7 wickets. The final is on next Tuesday at Merrion CC starting at 2pm. St Andrew’s will be looking to go one better than last year where they lost to Belvedere at the same stage while this is the first final that St Mary’s have been involved in since the 1970s. Both teams contain a host of talented players and it promises to be an excellent match.
