Our latest club feature is on Civil Service Cricket Club which is one of Ireland's oldest cricket clubs. Formed in 1863 in Dublin's Phoenix Park, the club currently has over 40 members and competes in the Leinster league and cup competitions. The club has a fantastic history and are still making memories today.
The club currently has four men’s teams which compete in numerous leagues and cups in Leinster and enjoyed recent success in the 2019 season. The first XI won the Middle Cup while the 2nd XI won Division 9 in 2019. Also the 3rd XI finished runners up in a “winner takes all” last day game in Division 12 and the 4XI won Minor 2 Cup in 2019.
They not only compete in the Leinster league and cup competitions but social cricket has a large part to play in the club. They have their own Taverners team who usually play on weekday evenings against a variety of other taverner’s teams. The club resurrected the popular Business Houses league which is currently played on the ground as a 20 over midweek competition by 8 teams which has been a huge success. They host a number of charity events during the summer months, including an annual fundraising game between the Dublin Fire Brigade and An Garda Siochana for St Francis Hospice and a charity test match in aid of homeless charities.
One area the club is heavily focused on at the moment is developing their boys and girls youth section. The club is developing links with local schools and are eager start competing in underage programmes.
At the backbone at the revival of the youth section is treasurer and lifelong club member Keith Webster who says “we are working hard behind the scenes developing our youth structure, increasing the number of youth members and hope to have teams competing in the underage leagues in Leinster very soon.”
He goes on to say “Civil Service has been a massive part of my family for as long as I can remember. We are a very welcoming club with members from all across the globe, and many simply stumbled upon us while walking through the Phoenix Park. Many an opponent has said they love playing cricket against Civil Service and that's a great compliment.”
All in all, a fantastic club with such a great history of cricket in Dublin and a scenery that’s hard to beat.
