There is a long history of cricket being played in Kilkenny and at one time in the past the county enjoyed more than 50 teams playing regularly. Kilkenny Cricket Club, in its present format, was re-established in 2018, after nearly a 100-year absence. It is located on the outskirts of Kilkenny City and is ideally situated at the picturesque estate of Castle Blunden.
When Cricket Leinster visited the club in May 2019 we were met by Ed, the club president, on top of a tractor. As we followed him through the gates and around behind the castle building, through the outhouses and down to a field we were met by a dozen or so people out on the field.
These were people of many different backgrounds and different ages all coming together to build this club. Talking to a number of the club members they are so excited about their new pitch, with a sense of pride that was unbeatable.
Since then Kilkenny has hit their stride with their new pitch fully laid and ready to be played on in late July 2019 as well as a two lane net erected in August 2019. The club started off 2020 with indoor nets running in their local Loretto school. Something that has certainly comes across to anyone that meets the club committee, is that they are a very organised, passionate and determined club with loyal and future driven members.
Edmund Hart, President of Kilkenny CC, says:
“We welcome members of all background and abilities to join us. We are a diverse and multicultural club and have members from across the globe. Presently we have a men’s team playing league cricket in the Leinster leagues as well as friendly fixtures. We are adding in 2020 a Women’s and Children development team for boys and girls, to further develop cricket in the region, all are welcome at Kilkenny CC.”
