Today sees the final of the first major competition of the cricket season, the RSA Leinster Senior Schools Cup. Stretching back in an unbroken sequence to 1905, it is one of the oldest sporting competitions in Ireland and indeed anywhere in the cricketing world. The first winners in 1905 were King’s Hospital, and the last Belvedere [the full list of previous winners can be found on the website at Archives > Articles > Select a Topic > Records].
Competing this year are two schools, St Andrews and St Marys, who have each won the competition three times and are replete with players who are already making their way in senior cricket [see yesterday’s article by Ger Siggins]. While this is mainly a day for the two schools involved, and is the highlight of the short schools cricket season, there will also be great interest among the clubs who have players from their youth teams involved. This year the majority of the players come from three clubs, Terenure, Leinster and YMCA.
A big crowd is expected in Anglesea Road [Merrion CC] for the match, which starts at 2.00. But if you cannot make it [or are biding your time until your employer lets you leave early] you can follow updates and live scores online through the RSA [Live Scores] Match Centre or your Mobile [Smart] Phone by going to http://www.cricketleinster.ie/live
