An enquiry has come to Bray Town Council about a match played between the Australian touring side and an English XI at the Woodbrook Cricket Club Ground outside Bray in 1912. The English side included such luminaries as W Rhodes, Jack Hobbs, CB Fry and SF Barnes. The enquiry is from a New Zealand cricketer [Martin McTamney] who has a bat signed by both teams and he was wondering if anyone had any further information about the ground. Eight of the English XI had played test cricket and the other three were 1st Class players, two of whom [H Wilkinson and A Baker] came from Wicklow.
The match was the second in a triangular tournament that also involved a South African XI. The owner of the ground was Sir Stanley Cochrane [1st Baronet of Woodbrook] of Cantrell & Cochrane fame and five first class matches were played on it between 1907 and 1912.
If anyone has any other information on the ground they might let us know and we will pass it on.
