Cricket Leinster are delighted to provide an update on the Cricket4All work that has got underway in recent months in both Tyrrelstown and Malahide.
Both areas are welcoming Cricket4All activities to their clubs and communities after a successful period with Cricket4All activities in Balbriggan and Skerries in 2022.
In Tyrrelstown, children with disabilities and additional needs have been taking part in weekly adapted cricket and table cricket sessions at both St Luke's NS and Tyrrelstown ETNS. The month of June has began with these children playing, competing and taking part in cricket4all activities alongside one another at the grounds of Tyrrelstown Cricket Club. For many of these children it has been their first introduction to the sport and was their first introduction to a cricket club.
Assistant Principal and Sport Coordinator, Paul from Tyrrelstown ETNS has spoken about the impact the project has had on some of the young people in the school.
“It has been such a great experience for the pupils in Tyrrelstown ET working with Killian and Cricket Leinster, the children involved have grown in both confidence and skill while thoroughly enjoying themselves. The inclusion and adaptation model used by Killian has been very rewarding. It is such a fantastic child centred approach that we are looking forward to continuing in the near future.“
Elsewhere in the Tyrrelstown and wider Dublin 15 area, the National Learning Network (NLN) will receive a taster session on both table cricket and outdoor adapted cricket sessions, with a view to also introducing them to the local cricket club. Over the course of the summer, various activities are set to be planned at Tyrrelstown Cricket Club for both young people with disabilities and older adults.
In Malahide, an initial Cricket4All session is planned for both older adults and young people with disabilities at Malahide Cricket Club in the coming weeks. Other taster sessions will be delivered to various Disability Support Group and Active Retirement Groups in the area.
Killian Molloy, is the coordinator for the project and is happy to see the project being expanded to the new areas
"It is fantastic to see the project starting to take off in new areas. Tyrrelstown and Dublin 15 have seen such a phenomenal growth of the sport over the last number of years and we are delighted to further add to this, with our disability and inclusion programmes. Malahide is an area with a rich and proud cricketing history and I am looking forward to adding to this by helping people who previously not played or had the chance to play the sport to get involved."
Elsewhere in Skerries, 26 teachers from St Michael's House Special Needs National School took part in a table cricket leaders course. The course provided them with the knowledge and expertise on the sport, while also giving them the power to continue the cricket development that has taken part in the school in the last number of years.
Further work will continued to be rolled out in various areas of Fingal with a key emphasis on the areas of Dublin 15 and Malahide.
The Cricket Leinster Disability Programme is run in partnership with Lords Taverners Ireland (LTI) - the charity runs under the tagline “giving every child a sporting chance” and has been supporting the programme in Leinster for many years.
