The Sherwin O’Riordan sponsored Leinster Lightning left The Mardyke this evening having completed two comprehensive wins over the home side, the first of which secured their 8th IP20 title in the 12 years of this competition.
Having lost the toss for the second day running, Leinster Lightning put in another solid batting performance at the Mardyke with contributions from a number of players without anyone going on to make a significant innings.
Wickets fell at regular intervals around useful knocks from Chris DeFreitas (in today for Seamus Lynch) who made 45, Sam Harbinson who chipped in with 38 at number 7 and cameos of 32 apiece from opener Tim Tector (off just 18 balls) and Lorcan Tucker (off a more sedate 34 balls).
Importantly the last four Lightning wickets contributed 86 runs in 18 overs to ensure their bowlers had something to defend in the second innings of the match.
Best with the ball for Munster were Merrion’s Peter Francis (4-43) and Leinster’s Gareth Delany with 3-31 off his 7 overs.
The Munster chase again struggled against some quality bowling and were reduced to 36-5 by a Clontarf triumvirate of Fionn Hand (1), Reuben Wilson (2) and John McNally (2 including PJ Moor).
Gavin Hoey then took the key wicket of Gareth Delany to make it 68-6 off 19 overs. Peter Francis followed quickly thereafter, also to Hoey, the score just 81-7 in the 21st over.
The late order for Munster fought on to add some respectability to the team total before tamely subsiding to 119 all out in just the 27th over of the reply.
