Cricket Leinster is delighted to have the opportunity to support the Enniscorthy CC Centenary celebrations this weekend - all in aid of Slaney Search & Rescue.
Slaney Search & Rescue is a voluntary organisation based in Enniscorthy which aims to search for, rescue or recover missing persons in County Wexford waters.
It all commences on this Sunday 4th August with a 6-aside tournament from 10.00am to 6.00pm. There will be an accompanying BBQ with music and comical commentary - all taking place at Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium.
This is intended as a fun way of introducing people to cricket with social teams and lots of craic.
Then on Sunday evening, the Back Beats band will be playing in Enniscorthy Rugby Club from 8.00 pm till late as part of the Rockin Food Festival with fun dance lessons and much more!
Enniscorthy CC will then play the Leprechauns at Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium with a 1.00pm start. It will be played as timed cricket as a nod to tradition and the Centenary itself.
So it will also be played in whites with a red ball.
Accompanying the cricket will be a Vintage Picnic from 1.00pm to 6.30pm with Enniscorthy Historical Re-Enactment Society also present. People attending are invited to dress up as in 1919 and bring along a rug and picnic basket to watch the match.
Memorabilia and documents from a bygone era will be on display during the festival.
Massive congratulations to Ian Walshe, Stephen Hadley, Martin Sheridan-Pope, George Copeland and many others who has worked tirelessly to make all this happen.
All proceeds towards Slaney Search & Rescue which is a very worthy cause.
Enniscorthy Cricket Club was founded in the Anthenaeum Hall on 26th February 1919.
The Club started in a field near Enniscorthy, but then had its home in the Showgrounds until it folded in 1968. When searching through documents retained, over 500 different names were associated with the Club over the years and some of these families are still living around Enniscorthy today.
Cricket is still in some of those families with George Dockrell currently playing for Ireland. George’s grandfather (Jim Quinn) used to help with maintenance of the cricket ground in the Showgrounds.
Jack, Harry and Tim Tector have all captained Ireland at different levels whilst their late grandfather (Bill) was capped for Ireland in rugby and played cricket for Enniscorthy.
Leslie, Andrew and Terence Deacon all played cricket for various clubs in Dublin whilst their uncle (George Copeland) played cricket with Enniscorthy.
Ian and Jonathan Walshe played for various cricket clubs around Leinster. They are the sons of George and the nephews of Alfie Walshe (now both deceased). Ian and Jonathan are also the grandsons of Ernie and Ethel Walshe. Ernie used to look after the cricket grounds in the Showgrounds, was secretary to the Cricket Club and used to get the team out every week. Ethel used to make the teas at the home matches.
Jonathan is currently President of the Midlands & South East Cricket Association.
