Cricket Leinster Youth (@leinsteryouth) talked to Jack Tector this week about his on-going relationship with Glamorgan County Cricket Club. The YMCA batsman has high ambitions and hopes Glamorgan can be a large stepping stone to even higher honours.
So Jack, how did the Glamorgan contact come about?
I first came over to Glamorgan when I was 15. I know Brian Rose quite well and he had just been asked by Glamorgan to help them in a senior role. He offered me the opportunity to go over and it’s gone from there really.
How much contact have you had with them since then?
I've been in contact quite a bit since. They've been following my progress and fortunately this season has gone well so they were keen for me to come over on a trial basis.
How do you plan to use the Glamorgan chances to spur on your ambitions in Ireland?
Hopefully if I do well in Glamorgan it will be noticed back home. Playing second team here is a good standard so it's a great test and can only make me a better cricketer. It is a great experience and one which I will make the most of.
How do you think playing for Glamorgan improved your game?
The pitches allow quick bowlers to get it through which is a slightly different test to back home. The bowling is just that bit more consistent which forces you to put the bad ball away when it comes and be ruthless. I am also playing 3-day games which allows you to bat time which is good.
What has been your personal highlight playing for Glamorgan?
Hitting 91 against a Hampshire attack which included Jackson Bird. I turned up on the morning of the game and saw him and had to look twice!
What have you found to be the differences in the County game versus the club game in Ireland?
Just the consistency and speed of the bowlers. You don't really get a huge amount of short stuff in club cricket whereas over here you get tested on it quite regularly!
What are your hopes for your potential Glamorgan career?
I'd love to get a professional contract over here. Glamorgan is a great club who have been really good to me when I've been over. All I can do is try and score runs and hopefully the rest will look after itself.
What are your ambitions in Irish cricket going forward?
I really want to break into the interprovincial set up and get into the Leinster Lightning team. Obviously to play for Ireland is my dream so to have the interprovincial pathway is a massive opportunity.
