While many of the RCD1 / RCD2 matches turned out to be one-sided affairs, anyone who made their way to Malahide to see the Women’s league game against Merrion in the Kidd Insurances [50 Over] WD1 were treated to a nail biting finish and over 500 runs in the day.
Batting first Malahide built their innings around an excellent 137* by Mary Waldron out of a total of 252/6 in their allotted overs. Merrion had to dig deep to chase down the runs with three players making half-centuries [Leah Paul 50, Kate Fryatt 87 and Isobel Joyce 50*], with the runs finally coming for the loss of eight wickets in the 48th over.
With over 500 runs scored this was not the day for the bowlers the most successful of whom was Aisling McCormack who took 4/28 for Malahide.
I am not sure if anyone can confirm this from the records but this may well be the biggest run-chase the Merrion women have ever successfully completed and over the two innings this must be one of the largest aggregate scores for a women’s club match. If anyone remembers a larger overall total let us know.
