SEAN DAVEY'S century led Malahide to their second National Cup as they beat Terenure by 17 runs in a thrilling at North County.
Davey dominated a Malahide innings punctuated by frequent rain stoppages, scoring an unbeaten 108 from 125 balls (7 fours, 5 sixes) to help the villagers to a competitive 213 for 7 in the 40-over contest.
He dominated a third wicket stand of 82 in 124 balls with former Irish international Fintan McAllister (17), while Callum Riches (18) and skipper Alan Reynolds (15) were the other players to reach double figures.
The Terenure reply started briskly with another former Irish international - Jeremy Bray - rolling back the years with a series of trademark cuts, pulls and drives.
Bray added 66 in just 55 balls with South African overseas professional Givon Christian who made just 12 in their opening assault.
Danny O'Shea (2-22) got the breakthrough as he had Christian caught behind and with Neil Boyne (3-26) and Davey (2-39) all among the wickets Malahide were well on top as Terenure faltered to 117 for 6.
Bray continued to play positively and while he was there, Terenure were still well in the game. Bray had reached 92 from just 79 balls (11 fours, 3 sixes) when he was well caught at deep point by O'Shea off that man Davey and it looked game over, especially when Seamus Lynch fell soon after to leave Terenure on 154 for 8 with just 9 overs left.
However a 9th wicket stand of 41 in 37 balls between Yasir Cheema (33) and Donal Lynch (15) saw the momentum swing back to Terenure with the equation showing them requiring 19 off 18 balls.
Cameron Shoebridge - who has rather uniquely played youth international cricket for both Ireland and Scotland - proved the Malahide hero as he first caught and bowled Lynch at the second attempt, and then two balls later trapped Cheema lbw to seal a 17-run win, much to the delight of the Malahide support who had travelled in such numbers.
Davey not surprisingly was awarded the Man-of-the-Match for his superb all-round display.
