This weekend sees the next of the season’s cup finals –
Balbriggan 2 v Castleknock – Jack Harper Memorial Ground (Balbriggan) – Sat. 6th August - 1.00 pm
The Middle 2 Cup is the “youngest” of our cup trophies. It dates from 1999 when the growth of team numbers at the then Middle and Intermediate levels indicated that a new trophy was needed. It now covers for the most part teams in league divisions 7 and 8.
Neither of this year’s finalists have reached this stage of this competition in the past so there will be a new name on the cup. Balbriggan, through their long history, have of course won many other cups. Castleknock, a club less than ten years in existence, have yet to win a cup trophy having been unsuccessful in two finals at Middle and Junior level. They will obviously be hoping for a first success either today or in next week’s Intermediate Cup final which there second eleven has reached.
On their paths to the final, Balbriggan accounted for North Kildare 2, Merrion 5 and Adamstown 2 while Castleknock overcame Wicklow County, North County 4 and Clontarf 4. Balbriggan are having a good league season leading Division 8 by a distance while Castleknock are struggling in the lower reaches of Division 6. On paper there may not be much between the teams therefore but having the final on their home ground may shade it for Balbriggan.
