It was one of the finest weekends of cricket across the island, spread geographically from Cork County's tight win over Malahide, to Bready's memorable Ulster Cup win over Waringstown. Throw in two brilliant Irish Senior Cup smie finals, a Leinster weekend full of surprises, and plenty more in between, and you would have thought our All Ireland rankings would be full of ups and downs.
Unfortunately that was not quite the way it turned out. Despite losing to Merrion last week, YMCA's spot at the top is unchanged. As time passed, older reaults have less influence on a team's ranking and mid August has traditionally been a poor period for YM. This week, three losses have dropped off their ranking - to Leinster (2013), Merrion (2012) and Railway Union (2011).
Clontarf and The Hills were both narrow favourites to in their Irish Senior Cup semi finals, and hence don't move up by much.
The big movers during the week were Glendermott (who beat Killyclooney) and Cork County (who beat Malahide) It is fair to say that there is nothing between some clubs - for example only 0.26 points separate Glendermott, St Johnston and Fox Lodge, and they can easily overtake each other from week to week.
Killyclooney may look at their lowly 48th spot (up one place on the year) and wonder what they have to do to move up. But it is worth remembering how far they have come this year. At the beginning of the season, they were bottom of these rankings with a score of only 10.334. After six wins in the Championship, as well as the famous cup run to the National Cup final, their score has tripled to 31.028, and they now have other teams such as Templepatrick, Creevedonnell and Dublin University in their sights.
The two big matches this weekend are the Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup, and the National Cup. The rankings say Clontarf (4th) will edge home over The Hills (6th) and Carrickfergus (26th) will triumph over Killyclooney (48th).
It's just as well cricket matches can't be decided by lines of formulae
