The League Table for D2 has a somewhat artificial look as Trinity have completed their season of double-point matches while other teams have played 4/5 matches. With fours wins Trinity have had a very satisfactory season but their loss in their last game against Terenure will probably mean that they do not figure in the battle for the two promotion spots.
Attention therefore focusses on the chasing teams with Balbriggan, Malahide, Leinster and Rush all looking to figure in the hunt. This makes the Rush v Leinster game the most interesting fixture of the round. Rush on their home ground have shown in recent weeks that they can post mammoth scores and with Stephen Doheny and Lynal Jansen in the line-up they are well capable of creating problems for Leinster. And if they are to challenge for promotion this could prove an important match for them against one of their main rivals. Leinster, on the other hand, come into the game having lost only one domestic match this season [by one wicket to Trinity] and with two D1 scalps in their last two. They will be strengthened by the return of George Dockrell.
In the second game of the round Terenure take on Cork County. The sides go into this match with a win a piece [although Terenure’s against Trinity is worth double]. Cork, however, are three places behind Terenure in the table will be be anxious to close the gap and see if they can recover some of the form that saw them promoted to D1 two seasons ago.
The last match is between North Kildare and Balbriggan, both teams who can be reasonably pleased with their season so far. North Kildare, who have had to adjust quickly to the higher standard of senior cricket, have secured two wins so far and have proven that they can compete at this level. Balbriggan also have taken a step up this year and certainly look like real contenders for one of the two top spots.
