While more than half of Open Competition players learnt their cricket abroad [the numbers are closer to three quarters if youth players are excluded] it has always been known that a much lower figure applied to ‘Senior’ cricket [Divisions 1 & 2].
A detailed look at the figures for 2019 shows that nearly 40% of Senior Players learned their cricket outside of Ireland. For those who did not learn their cricket in Ireland the breakdown by country or origin is set out in the chart below.
Of the total number of senior players [313], a quarter made their senior debuts in 2019. But only a third of these [26] learnt their cricket in Ireland. Twenty-one of these were U18. Forty-seven youth players [U18] took part is senior league and league/cup competitions in 2019.
The breakdown of player participation across the Leinster clubs [excluding Dublin University] is as follows.
Finally, to account for the students, 18 turned out for DU and 7 went on to play senior cricket with their main clubs in the second half of the season.
The age profile of senior cricketers, roughly broken down between youth [under 18], student age [U23], peak career [mid 20s to early 30s], and veterans [mid 30s to early 40s] is set out below. There are seven players who might be counted super-veterans.
