Not for the first time this season, the Leinster Lightning were stymied by the weather in a Test Triangle Inter-Provincial Championship match, as the Northern Knights visit Pembroke.
Just 43 of the scheduled 104 overs were bowled, as the predicted rain intervened on two separate occasions.
Ireland Test opener James McCollum (24) opened as if in a T20 match but he was the first wicket to fall, edging Peter Chase to Cormac McLoughlin-Gavin at third slip.
Tyrone Kane had the Knights 48/2 when an in-swinging delivery had Murray Commins shouldering arms and the off-stump out of the ground.
Josh Little (1-20) and Barry McCarthy (1-15) bowled beautifully in tandem. They didn’t always threaten the stumps but played brilliantly on the patience of Marc Ellison and Gary Wilson.
Little was first to be rewarded as Wilson (16) top-edged a hook to McCarthy at deep square leg. McCarthy followed up with an excellent wicket as the pressure built and told on Ellison (36).
After pushing the ball wide of off-stump, McCarthy would swing the odd ball back in seeking the edge of a bat. After a couple of unsuccessful appeals, there was no doubt in the 27th over when Lorcan Tucker was able to pouch a simple catch behind the stumps.
With the Knights then 86/4, Harry Tector (29*) and Shane Getkate (24*) put on exactly 50 to take the visitors to Tea without further loss.
While at Tea, the rain returned with a vengeance and stayed down for the evening meaning no more play was possible after the 43rd over.
Day 2 of this Inter-Provincial Championship match gets underway at 11am with live ball-by-ball scoring on the Match Centre on www.cricketleinster.ie and updates on @cricketleinster and @lcu_lightning on Twitter.
