Grounds Report 2011
Much of the work of the LCGA in 2011 involved establishing regular lines of communication
with the clubs in the LCU. A mailing list of approx 80 contacts is now used regularly to keep members informed of developments. The list includes members from the majority of clubs but there is room for new members from clubs, schools, parks dept etc. Anyone with a broad interest in cricket grounds and their development is most welcome. All we need is an email address.
A major proposal was put to the LCU at the start of the season to fund an equipment trailer. A list of equipment was drawn up, sourced and priced. The core elements of the trailer are a Graden Scarifier and a Groundsman Spiker. The goal is to improve Autumn renovations on all grass wickets to an acceptible and consistant level. Clubs etc now have the tools to achieve this target without the outlay of large funds on capital equipment.
In August the scheme was approved and the equipment purchased to the value of approx
€11,000. In all 8 clubs have used parts of the trailer so far. Spiking has now commenced and this will involve additional clubs . It is estimated that rentals will bring in approx €1500 in the first year. However, the success of the scheme should be based on the quality of wickets in 2012 and beyond, and not purely in financial terms. The LCU is to be commended for investing in this area.
In general, the reaction of clubs and groundsmen to the LCGA has been very positive. Members have taken ownership of the Association and cooperation has increased. By improving the profile of the groundsman and the work they do clubs have been rewarded with a more motivated member of their club. The objective must be to encourage more of the same.
For next year the following areas need to be addressed :
