How the league was won - As we write, a large asterisk needs to be applied to the promotion and relegation battles in Division 11. The league itself was very much a two tier affair. There wasn't much between the top five - Railway Union 4, Knockharley 2, Laois 3, Civil Service 3 and Clontarf 5. Clontarf lost three of their last four matches to lose their way and Civil Service only had eleven matches that avoided the weather. Of those eleven, they lost to Railway Union twice, and Knockharley once. The loss to Clontarf on August 18th cost them dearly.
Laois 3 didn't lose a match until July 22nd - and then lost two in six days to leave them with too much to do. So it was left to Knockharley 2 and Railway Union 4 to slug it out. The rain savaged the first half of Knockharley's season, and their first completed match wasn't until June 30th. After that they won seven from nine - the loss to Clontarf on September 15th leaving them in second place.
That leaves Railway Union who for long periods were unbeatable. They won the first five matches of the season, but lost two in late August/early September to leave them in second place behind Knockharley. A big win over North County took them back to top spot, but they couldn't refix the final crucial match against Bagenalstown - leading to a 25 point penalty and the appeal that is hanging over the destination of the Division 11 trophy. Details will be posted once the LCU Executive have deliberated.
How dreams turned to nightmares - If the top five were aiming for promotion, the other four had to fight it out at the dirty end of the table. The Hills 4 were never really in trouble, and only slipped towards the bottom (no) thanks to losing five of their last six matches. North County 5 were very much in trouble, and only survived thanks to re-arranging some outstanding matches for the very end of the season, and winning one of them.
That leaves Bagenalstown 2 and North Kildare 3, who filled the bottom two places. Bagenalstown would have survived except for the penalty received for not playing the Railway Union 4 match. That match is subject to an appeal. It should be noted though that in the provisional league structure (to be poublished at the end of the week), both North County 5 and Bagenalstown 2 will be in Division 11 in 2013
Heroes with the willow - Not quite a vintage season for anyone who describes themselves as a Division 11 batsman. Of those who scored 200 runs (six batsmen), only two did so at an average of other 30. Ultan Doherty of The Hills turned out for the second half of the season, and scored 203 runs at 40.6, whilst MT Raza of Railway Union scored 243 at 40.5. There was only one century all season - Colin Currie of Clontarf scored 101* in his only Division 11 match - it was the highlight of his season though, as his other six innings brought 37 runs at 9.25
Hell for leather - It may not have been a division for batsmen, but bowlers were definitely made to feel at home. Adrian Tudor of Laois led the list with 23 wickets at 13.26. Incredibly though there were eight bowlers who took at least ten wickets at an average of under ten. Have a look at the lists below for full details, but the pick was probably Sean Devilly of Clontarf with 18 wicket at 5.67
Days to remember - With every instance that offers great memories of a cricket season, there will be someone (or a team) that doesn't ever want to remember the moment again. Ultan Doherty will remember July 29th 2013 for ever - anyone iN North County will probably prefer to forget it. North County 5 made the trip to Milverton, and were bowled out for 20 with Doherty taking 6-5. Ian Byrne was the only other bowler used, taking 3-15. Incredibly though, North County soon fancied their chances of winning, and The Hills were something like 3-3 (the fall of wicket was not recorded). Doherty strode to the wicket, and made sure of the match, scoring 15 not out - 68% of his side's total
Stat you may have missed - Of those who took ten wickets, Hadley Southall of Railway Union had the best strike rate. He took a wicket every 10.4 balls all season
