RSA OCC: Fantasy Round Up: Part I
Fantasy points – 2011 to 2013 [part 1]
In years to come, people will find it incredulous that results of junior league cricket matches used to be submitted to Michael Sharp by postcard. Quite what Michael’s postman made of all of these postcards arriving day after day is unknown, but the doormat of the Sharp’s house must have seen thousands of these white cards over the years. Each one of these cards was then analysed and points added to the various manual sheets, which Michael kept meticulously before league tables could be produced and circulated back to the clubs during the season. All of this work was before each card was viewed afresh to see who was performing well and who was playing at a level that needed looking at by the starring committee. It must have been some mountain of work, which was unpaid, unseen and unappreciated by most and in addition to a normal’s day work.
Many remain in awe, although not as many as remain ignorant as to the amount, of the work done by various volunteers down the years, such as Michael Sharp, Gerry Byrne, Derek Scott and others, in producing statistics and data for the Senior League cricket sides. Thankfully in 2011 the Leinster Cricket Union introduced a new system for the submission of results to bring the procedure into the twenty-first century. This new computer based method administered by Paul Reynolds, has allowed an easier analysis of players and team records. The new arrangements do allow such figures to be produced for the lower teams to the same level of analysis as the ‘Senior’ sides, which was not covered previously. Although it does have to be said that there were a small number of individuals who over the years who kept their own records, game by game, season by season and who could quote you their averages to three decimal places at any time. You know who you are.
The new method of collecting data for the Leinster leagues has also allowed the production of the Fantasy tables covering all levels of Leinster cricket and not just the top level. Here we stretch and stress the figures for the past three years and examine the performances of all of the players who have appeared in Leinster league and cup campaigns. Using the regular points system, which you all should know at this stage, we can announce that the highest fantasy point scorer, and therefore the MVP 2013, over the period 2011 to 2013 is Simmi Singh [YMCA].
Using the same formula as seen in the divisional reviews previously published you can now see the full analyses for the three years below. Players, who may have changed Clubs, are shown with their most recent Club and, where known, their first name. In this article we also publish the list of players who made cricket and the playing of it their number one goal each summer. Players for whom going to the shopping centre on a Saturday is a no-no and for whom gardening is something they do with a bat just outside the crease.
Do feel free to request some or all of the figures by emailing craig@cricket.ie and I will endeavour to reply as rapidly as I used to run singles, although it might be as quickly as I run them now.
The figures include 3,380 players so you will excuse the fact I have not published every single name, however here are the top 100 point scorers in the period 2011 – 2013 and they were as follows (the top scorer in each club is highlighted in bold):

On a point per game table things do change as such a list allows players who have made a minimal amount of appearances to shine. Perhaps these are players that we should be encouraging to appear more rather than just on the odd time when a captain is short of 11 players, or maybe they have only had one season, whatever the reason they have had a chance to shine and deserve recognition. It is hoped that the figures will show a good mix of the provinces top players and some from lower in the leagues who can shine brightly too. Whilst S. Moore [Terenure] would top such a table with 210 points per game, a minimum of 9 appearances over three years has been applied in order to give the list some degree of relevance.

That completes the appearances and overall point tables for this article. In the next offering the focus will be on those who wield the wood, the batsmen. Not just the specialists who give their team hope and joy, nor the middle order stroke players who cause more lost balls than anyone else, but anyone and everyone who straps the pads to their legs and heads off to the middle to add to the teams total, to hold up an end or just to scamper a few streaky runs at the end of an innings, or in Conor Gibbon’s case, to see what those pad things feel like…..
