It is impossible to compare bowlers from different eras. The change to overs restrictions means that the modern bowler cannot take the same number of wickets compared with those who played mainly in time games.
For this reason the threshold for qualifying for Career Bowling Averages for modern bowlers has been set at 250 wickets, half the level set for earlier generations. Only one bowler from the current era, Nazeer Shoukat, has managed to reach the 500 mark.
The twenty four bowlers who have reached the 250 wicket mark are set out in the table below. No one who bowled in the 2024 season is close to this threshold. Two players, Duane Harper [Balbriggan / North County] and Bilar Azhar [Leinster] have more than 200 wickets, 218 and 217 respectively.
For the record, 33 players have taken 500 or more wickets in their career. Three have made it past the 1000 wicket mark.
