Squad in IT Carlow making great strides
Cricket in Carlow took more positive steps recently. The Institute of Technology Carlow Cricket team reached the semi final stage of the recently held 3rd Level Indoor cricket All-Irelands in Galway where they were beaten off the last ball of the match by GMIT. This was a great achievement as the IT Carlow team have only been in existence for just over a year and they were playing against many more experienced teams.
Not to be outdone the squad were back training straight away in preparation for the upcoming outdoor season. They had guest coach Kenny Carroll, who is a former Irish International and LCU / SDCC Development Officer helping them for the day. Kenny was very impressed at the talent and ability on display as he took the lads through fielding, batting and bowling practice.
IT Carlow has become a hub for cricket in the South East area with players of the calibre of Matt Auret (Laois CC) and Josh Uddin (Railway Union CC), who are both recent Leinster youth representatives, enrolled in the College. Manik Islam is the club captain and one of the driving forces behind cricket in the IT and Carlow town.
Also attending the training session was Borris lad Shane O'Neill who plays for Bagenalstown CC. The multi talented Shane is well known across many sports especially hurling, where he plays for the renowned Mount Leinster Rangers club and also for Carlow, and he has now been called up to the Leinster under 17 cricket squad for the 2013 season, a proud achievement for himself, his family and his club.
