Congratulations to St Mary's who defeated St Andrew’s College at a rather chilly (some would say Arctic!) Wesley College today. They added the Junior League to the Senior league that they won in such style on Tuesday. Unfortunately for St Andrew’s they were the victims of another very good St Mary’s final performance.
St Andrews batted first but were soon in trouble at 23 for 2. James Meir led a spirited fight back with swashbuckling 37 off 24 balls that included 3 sixes. However accurate Mary’s bowling and tight fielding pegged back St Andrew’s whose batsmen struggled to get on top. Wickets fell at regular intervals and without a good knock by Cameron Shoebridge (30) St Andrew’s would have struggled to have posted the competitive total of 130. Oisin Farrell with 3-32 was the pick of the St Mary’s bowling. It was a testament to their bowling that there was only 1 wide and 3 no balls bowled in 30 overs.
130 in a Junior final played in cold, cloudy and wet conditions on a grass wicket is not a bad total but it was to prove too few as St Mary’s knocked off the runs in 26.
An opening partnership of 65 between Eamon Byrne (32) and Conor O’Gorman (64 n.o.) took the match away from St Andrews. Patient batting by both saw them take advantage of any bad ball that came their way. When Byrne was run out St Andrew’s may have sensed an opportunity when captain Danny Hogan (22 n.o) joined the excellent Conor O’Gorman but their hopes were soon dashed. Conor and Danny accelerated the run rate. The range of shots produced by both batsmen was most impressive with late cuts, pulls, drives and sweeps. St Mary’s reached their target in the 27th over. Despite some good bowling St Andrew’s bowlers failed to take a single wicket between them such was Mary’s dominance with the bat.
