St Michael's win Alf O’Connell Cup
There were four sections in this year's 'Senior B' competition. St Michaels, Colaiste Padraig, Blackrock and Sandford won through to contest the semi-finals. St Michaels beat Blackrock and Sandford defeated Colaiste Phádraig. The Final was held at the High School on Monday, May 22nd in blustery conditions. Many thanks to Adam Malin for organising the venue.
Sandford batted first and their openers batted well with Chris Allwright scoring fifty ably supported by Jack Tector with 33. Sandford set a good target of 128 of their 20 overs. Padraic Flanagan along with brother Colm were the pick of the Michael’s bowlers while Conor Lequeria was kept very busy in the field.
St Michaels started their chase quickly with Rory O’Flanagan punishing any loose bowling on his way to 43. However, good Sandford fielding pegged St Michaels back and it looked as if the old cliché catches win matches would tell in Sandford's favour. However Chris Laquinka and Barry McCarthy kept their heads and batted very well to see St Michael’s home by 5 wickets.
