While there has been one match played in the Alan Murray T20 Competition this year [win for North County against Pembroke], the competition only really gets started tonight where there are three matches:
Pembroke v Merrion [Section D]
Malahide v Leinster [Section B]
Clontarf v The Hills [Section C]
The Alan Murray [T20] Competition commenced in 1980. Before that there had been a short lived mid-week league between 1952 and 1956. This competition was won by Leinster in 1952, followed by Malahide, Pembroke, YMCA and Pembroke again. There are very few details extant beyond the recording of the league winners.
A T20 competition was started again in 1974, organised by Harry Hill of Pembroke. Records are pretty scant in the early years and we don’t know which teams won between 1974 - 1979.
The position changed in 1980 when the Alan Murray 20 Over Competition under the aegis of the LCU was launched. If we date the results from 1980 the position is as follows:
Although Phoenix were successful in the early years, the competition has been dominated by two clubs, YMCA in the decade from 1986 when they took the trophy six times and Merrion who won seven times in the next decade. Thereafter the spoils have been reasonably well spread across the clubs.
Overall the most successful club is Merrion who were champions no less than eight times [including in 2015]. They are closely followed by YMCA [7] and then Phoenix and Clontarf [4]. The full list is as follows.
Merrion 8
YMCA 7
Phoenix 4
Clontarf 4
Railway 3
Terenure 3
Pembroke 2
The Hills 2
Leinster 1
North County 1
