Report on Senior Career Statistics
Three hundred and fourteen players and 15 clubs participated in the Leinster Senior] Competition in 2019, in the first year of the new centenary. A 100 years ago the comparable figures were 205 players and eight clubs. Debuts were awarded to 79 players, thus bringing the total of senior players since 1919 to 5,557. The number of players participating in senior competitions in 2019 is lower than the average for the last decade [327.6] but it must be remembered for most of this period there were 16 teams taking part in senior competitions. The number of debutants in 2019 is marginally above the annual average of 78.1 since 2010.
The total number of runs scored off the bat in 2019 was 34,795. This represented an average of 23.23 runs per wicket, close to the decade average of 23.1. There were 154 fifties and 35 centuries.
The total number of wickets taken in 2019 was 1,498. There were 22 five-wicket performances. Perhaps of greater interest to bowlers was the economy rate, which at 4.67 in 2019 was above the decade average of 4.5 runs per over. Bowlers may take some comfort from a drop in the number of extras [wides / no balls] down to them which at 11.5 per innings was the second lowest over the period.
There has been greater volatility in the number of five wicket hauls over the decade. The economy rate for bowlers has ranged from a low of 4.05 [2012] to 4.79 [2017].
