Swords Cricket Club have officially unveiled their new cricket pitch in Newbridge Park, Donabate on 28th Saturday April 2012.The pitch was inaugurated by the Hon.Mayor of Fingal County Council. Mary Sharp, Matt Sheridan and other club members attended pitch inauguration ceremony. Niall McGuirk from sports division, Fingal County Council welcomed the guests in the function.
Swords Cricket Club in conjunction with the Leinster Cricket Union and Fingal County Council organised a six a side cricket tournament for the first SWORDS CUP after the pitch opening. Six teams participated in the event. They were Balbriggan, Rush, Dundalk, Swords 1, Swords 2 and Tyrellstown.
The tournament was real fun and all the teams played the game with true passion and spirit. All the teams had a great warm up games before their league matches. The team from Dundalk lifted the Swords Cup and the Swords team came runners up. Jackson Santhosh from the Dundalk team was awarded the player of the tournament. Abin (swords) and Sunil(Dundalk) got the medals for the best catches in the tournament.
All the players and the spectators were delighted to see the Ireland Cricket team coach and west Indies Player Phil Simmons at the ground along with Leinster Cricket Manager Brian O’ Rourke who won ICC Europe Coach Award ‘Outstanding Contribution to Cricket Coaching’ for 2012.
For the presentation ceremony , Matt Sheridan, Tariq Salahuddin (indie spice restaurant,swords), Mary McCormack(Tara Winthrop Nursing home), Niall McGuirk (Fingal County Council) and George Purappanthanam ( President Swords CC ) were distributed the medals for the players.
