THE innings of 239 not out by Tariq Islam of Laois’s 3rd XI is possibly the highest individual score ever recorded in Leinster league cricket. (The scorecard can be viewed here)
Tariq’s monster knock was made on Saturday at Portlaoise, in a Division 11 game against Bagenalstown.
Over the years I’ve been “collecting” double hundreds in Irish cricket and have found at least 62. An article on Cover Point last year unearthed a few more.
By my reckoning – and its by no means exhaustive – only five had previously made in Leinster junior cricket, the highest being 210.
That was recorded by two Fingal legends - Michael Murphy for North County v Carlisle 2nds in 1989, and Michael Donnelly for Rush 4ths v Phoenix 5ths, in the Minor Cup Final 2005.
Tariq was given plenty of chances – he was dropped eight times, four times before he reached 10.
The Laois total of 409-1 in 40 overs also sounds like a record: Tariq was assisted by Shiva Katta who made an unbeaten 88 in an unbroken stand of 352.
Bagenalstown’s reply of 219-6 included 106 by Andre Hildebrand.
Below is a list of the scores of 200 or more the author has been able to trace. I would be delighted to hear of any additions. (gersiggins@gmail.com)
