A major weekend across Leinster, the NCU and North West, with 31 matches qualifying for our rankings. This included the climax of both the Irish Senior Cup and the National Cup, with The Hills and Carrickfergus being triumphant. All this had little impact on the top of the rankings though.
The top three stays as YMCA, Waringstown and Merrion, with Waringstown's wins over Lisburn and Civil Service increasing their average from 106.9 to 108.6 - still not quite enough to overtake YMCA, who had a weekend off.
The Hills temporarily forgot their lines, by following up their Irish Senior Cup success on Saturday with a league loss to North County on Sunday. The Hills average dropped from 102.1 to 100.6, whereas North County moved up two places (going from 80.3 to 83.7)
There was another changing of the guard in the North West, as the Top 3 continue to swap. Donemana's losses to Coleraine and Bready saw them drop from 10th to 12th. Brigade beat Eglinton and Fox Lodge, and moved to number 1 spot in the NW, with Coleraine's loss to Ardmore on Sunday meaning they lost an opportunity to overtake Brigade.
Carrickfergus's momentus weekend (with the National Cup win over Killyclooney preceded by a league win over rivals Lurgan) saw them move up from 26th to 24th. Derriaghy are also in the shake up for promotion from NCU Section 1, and their two wins over Bangor and Cliftonville moved them from 39th to 37th.
Downpatrick's two losses at the weekend - to Bangor and Templepatrick may not have raised too many headlines, but they raise the prospect of a historic acheivement for Leinster teams in these rankings. The measure of the number of teams that a province has in the top 20 represents a useful snapshot of the strength in depth in each province.
As the table shows, the highest number of teams in the top 20 was when Leinster had 9 in 2007 (a figure matched by the NCU in 2002). Downpatrick's two losses at the weekend, meant Leinster CC moved back into the top 20, giving them nine clubs again. Whether that situation stays until the end of the season remains to be seen.
Interestingly from a Leinster point of view, there have only been two changes in the make up of those nine clubs since 2007, with Rush and Phoenix being replaced by YMCA and Pembroke. Interestingly, Pembroke finished 2007 in 52nd place, just above Old Belvedere, The Nedd, Larne and North Fermanagh - and one below Coleraine!
When the NCU acheived their nine in the top 20 in 2002, the top nine were North Down, Waringstown, NICC, Bangor, Downpatrick, Cliftonville, Armagh, Instonians, Muckamore and Carrickfergus.
