This year's Wexford Schools Cricket Programme operated for 10 weeks from Monday 16th April until Friday 22nd June. This was a two-week longer period than last year due to the high demand from the schools.
In all 19 schools were involved, including 9 schools who were having their first experience of the game. The feedback from all of the schools was very positive both from the teachers and the pupils. Several teachers remarked that cricket was one of the most all-inclusive games that their schools had participated in. The annual blitz for the Trent Johnston Cup took place again at Gorey Cricket Club with Kilanerin National School emerging narrow victors over Gorey Central School.
I was very fortunate to have the services of Peter Hudson to assist me this year. Peter has coached the youth section at Wexford Wanderers Cricket Club for several years and he was of invaluable assistance.
I would also like to thank Dermot Rafter, Mark Leonard and Anselm Diaz who helped me on the coaching front and to Sports Active Wexford and Cricket Leinster for their generous support.
In all, 1,992 girls and boys received at least one cricket session with the majority receiving between two to five sessions each.
School coaching visits have started again this Autumn with several new schools now taking part. We look forward to the many events we have planned in the New Year.
