Just over 21% of those taking part in Open Competitions this year are aged under 19 [the percentage of the matches played by this group is slightly higher at 22.3%]. In the absence of any other information it is assumed that a benchmark of around one fifth of total participants in OC run leagues and cups being youth players is a reasonable baseline for the continued development and growth of the sport. This is something, however, that requires further reflection and analysis.
In terms of the relevant age groups, the largest cohort of players is at U17 level. The impact of state examinations can be expected to have taken a toll at the oldest age group as well as the normal drop off in participation in the late teens. It is interesting that there isn’t any drop-off in participation rates between 15 and 17 from amongst the more active young cricketers [i.e. those playing in adult competitions]. This of course may reflect a particular surge in playing numbers coinciding with the rise in the profile of the sport since 2007. This is something that needs to be carefully monitored from year to year.

Apart from the regional figures there is also useful information for clubs about how they are doing in bridging the gap between under age and adult competitions. Clubs will have a range of policies in this regard, e.g. some clubs do not play anyone under the age of 13 in adult teams, but the figures do at least provide a benchmark that clubs can use to gauge how they are doing in this particular area.
